Portable Generators: 

The second popular application for a portable generator is as an emergency power source for your home in the event of a power failure. If, during a power outage, you are only concerned with providing power to some cord and plug connected appliances such as, for example, a refrigerator, a freezer, a sump pump or a well pump, then you can connect one or more of these items directly to the portable generator through appropriately configured extension cords.

Remember, any portable generator must always be run outside of your home to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.

Another way to provide power to your home is to temporarily connect the portable generator to your house electrical system. When used this way the portable generator is usually temporarily connected through a manually operated transfer switch and the generator is manually started when a power failure occurs. The transfer switch is usually part of a sub-panel that incorporates all the house circuits you want the portable generator to power.
